Your Last Drive

My interpretation of this poem is that it is about some one who has died in a car accident and the person who is grieving for them telling us the story and how they personally feel about the incident.
Againt the themes seem to be death and sadness. The narrator is remembering what happened with remorse. They seem to have quite a spitefull sarcastic attitude towards the incident, almost as if they blame themselves. 'and on your left you passed the spot where eight days later you were to lie, and be spoken of as one who was not.' By 'one who was not' the narrator means someone who is dead, again this seems to be quite sarcastic as though they blame themselves for not knowing that if they were to pass that spot again they would be killed. They seem to be doing the same when they say ' I drove not with you...yet had I sat at your side that eve I should not have seen...nor have read the writing upon your face, 'I go hence to my resting-place' It is very sad that this person seems to blame themselves even though the reader knows that you cannot predict these things, you not only then feel bad for the person that has died but more sorry for the narrator left alone with their guilt.
